At the time of writing this post, the UK is currently in lockdown due to to the spread of Coronavirus. In an effort to ease the strain on the NHS and prevent as many deaths as possible, residents are being asked to dramatically reduce their day to day movements and are only allowed outside of their own homes for a select few reasons. It’s understandably a very uncertain time for everyone. We thought we’d share our tips for surviving lockdown with dogs.
One of the main restrictions imposed by the UK government is that we should stay at home. There are only a few very specific instances where we are permitted to venture outdoors, one of which is to take part in one form of exercise each day, such as walking, cycling or running.
If you are a dog owner, you are expected to use this allotted exercise time to take your dog out with you. Exercise must also take place directly from your front door where possible.
Explore Your Local Area
I’ve been amazed by the variety of walks I have on my doorstep. The dogs and I currently live in a flat in Plymouth, which isn’t ideal when you have to outdoor space and two spaniels stuck inside! However, since lockdown I’ve explored far more of our local area and am delighted to have found a variety of beaches, parks and quiet places to walk during our daily exercise allowance.

Enjoy Brain Games at Home
Contrary to popular belief, dogs don’t always need time outdoors to tire themselves out. There are plenty of brain games and activities that are equally as effective, many of which are easy to set up indoors.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money either or buy any fancy supplies. You’ll be amazed just how versatile your recycling waste can be! From snuffle mats to repurposed baking tins, there are so many dog friendly upcycling projects to try while in lockdown with dogs.

Set a New Routine
Understandably, the majority of the population’s daily life is up in the air at the moment due to coronavirus. It’s a particularly tricky time to navigate physically, mentally and emotionally. For many of us, our day-to-day lives have changed overnight. It will naturally take a while for us to acclimatise to our new ‘normal.’
Some dogs thrive with routine. Others prefer things to be spontaneous. If you own a dog that likes routine, lockdown can be particularly stressful. It may take some time and plenty of trial and error. However, it will ultimately help your household feel more comfortable in lockdown with dogs.
In contrast, I’m keeping things more spontaneous with my spaniels, as they often get bored when things are too predictable. We’ve had to swap our daily exercise schedule around (and cut it down in order to adhere to government restrictions) but every other aspect of our day is fluid. This gives them plenty of opportunity to choose their own activities. Sunbathing on the balcony is proving popular at the moment!

Plan Future Adventures
The old adage is true; this too shall pass. While we aren’t sure just how long lockdown restrictions will remain in place, we will ultimately get through this. We no longer have control over our lives like we used to for the foreseeable future. Giving yourself time to grieve all your trips and plans that have been cancelled is important.
What’s equally as important is thinking about all the adventures and activities you’re looking forward to once this lockdown with dogs passes. I for one am particularly excited about visiting our favourite woods again. We will definitely NOT be taking them for granted! I’ll also be planning trips to my favourite dog friendly UK destinations like the New Forest, Lake District and Dartmoor!
