Hiking is a fantastic activity to enjoy with your dog. You can hike throughout the year and all weathers. Not only is it fantastic exercise for both you and your dog, it’s also a great way to build a lasting bond together. With the added bonus of spectacular views, what’s not to love?! Today we thought we’d share some tips on how to hike with your dog.
First things first, you’ll need to make sure you’re both fit and healthy enough to hike. Long distance walking isn’t for the faint-hearted, particularly if you’re planning to walk over harsh, uneven terrain. You should wait until your dog is at least a year old before hitting the trail, be sure to get the all clear from your vet too!
Choose Your Route
Taking time to plan your route will help you successfully complete your hike with your dog, it’s important to plan in advance and factor in both you and your dog’s needs. Remember to inform your friends and family of your plans, particularly if you’re walking rurally. Send them a copy of your route, as well as your expected timings so they know when to expect you home.
It’s so important to take everything at you and your dog’s pace. It’ll take time to build your stamina together; don’t expect to be climbing Ben Nevis on your first hike! You also need to ensure your dog is fit and healthy enough to hike. It’s advised you wait until your dog is over 1 year old before hitting the trails together.

Plan Ahead
Planning is key for any outdoor pursuit; a hike with your dog is no exception. Checking the weather before you go is wise. Take note of any weather warnings for wind, storms or extreme temperatures. This will help you plan your route, as well as pack for your hike with your dog. If the weather is forecast to be particularly extreme, it’s probably wise to reschedule your adventure!
It’s also worth checking local amenities en route. Places like pubs, public toilets, cafes and parking. If you’re hiking with friends, make sure you consider their needs too, do you need to alter your route to make it child friendly?

Pack Smart
Depending on the length of your trip and the terrain you’ll likely encounter, you may need to pack a few specialist pieces of kit. For the majority of day hikes, there are a few key pieces you’ll need. Firstly, a lead and harness are essential, particularly if you’re walking near cliff edges or near wildlife or livestock. Of course, you’ll need to pack plenty of poo bags with you too, as you’re a responsible owner. Snacks and plenty of water are always welcome, especially on warmer days and longer hikes.
Footwear is another important consideration, for both you and your dog. If you’ll be navigating sharp, jagged rocks or extreme temperatures it may be worth investing in some boots to protect your dog’s paws. Alternatively, you can also pack paw balm, which will help soothe blisters, cuts and minor abrasions.

Have Fun!
Undoubtedly the most important step is to enjoy your hike with your dog. Take time for pit stops at stunning viewpoints, run through the waves and marvel at natural phenomena like the sea foam Woody and I discovered at Chapel Porth last winter.
Hiking is an incredible experience and a great opportunity to adventure and build trust together. Instead of rushing through routes to beat your personal best, stop for a moment and ensure you’re making the most of it!
