How to Show Your Dog Some Love

We all love our four-legged family members. They bring us so much joy that we wish we could tell them so.  Although we cant have a conversation we have asked the dog whisperers what tips they have on showing our dog pals how much they mean  to us. We often think our human modes of affection translate: Kissing, smothering and treats don’t have the same resonance with our four legged friends.

A lot of our dog’s behaviours is body language and also mimicking their own behaviours. We have listed some ways you can start showing your pup some love.

1. It’s all in the eyes

Dogs communicate a lot through eye contact. When your furry friend holds a long gaze with you the chances are it’s them trying to tell you how much they dote on you and love you. By reciprocating this lingering gaze you can show that love right back.

Be careful not to show any aggression in this stare out though as there is fine line between love and a show down in dog language.

2. Puppy Talk

There is no shame in putting on your ‘dog voice’. We all have one we reserve for conversations just with them. Dogs are highly sensitive to that change in pitch and also to sounds that relate to them. Whether it’s walkies, treats or their own name their known ‘love words’ all spark a little jolt of happiness in our pups lives.

3. Snuggling Up

Napping together is a strong indication to your dog that you are in the same family pack. It not only means you spend a bit of time together but also that you are connected in the same way dog families would be, eating, hunting and napping together as a group. Dogs like to do these together as they have an inherent. Dogs love touch – it releases oxytocin into their system meaning instant happy vibes. Give them a gentle smooth while you snuggle up – especially an ear stroke to calm them.

4. Pack Walks

It’s an indisputable fact – dogs love a walk! Being outside and roaming is a Dog’s natural state and they get so much enjoyment from sniffing and exercise and discovery. To fully enjoy this though dogs want their pack around them, that means you! Make sure you are spending time outdoors with your furry pals exploring together to build your bond.

5. Body Talk

Your dog can’t tell you what makes them tick but they will look to communicate with you through their body language. Get to know your dog’s language with you. Each dog has their own way of showing you what they are thinking or feeling but some more common indicators; Ears back – uncomfortable or worried, panting – when not hungry or thirsty can be a sign of worry/nervousness.

Hopefully that gives you some tips on how to show your wonderful four-legged friend some love.
