From the northernmost tip of Scotland to England’s most southerly point, our island nation boasts a seamless reel of coastline promising hours of cherished moments on the shore with your four-legged friend. Helping you to plan your sea-kissed getaway, we’ve picked out some of the very best dog-friendly beaches in the UK, open to canines year-round and just perfect for beach-loving pups and people alike.

Perranporth, Cornwall

Perranporth Beach in Cornwall

England’s most southerly county, Cornwall has some of the very best beaches in the world. Known for its palmed-lined proms and picturesque fishing coves, it’s a real dream of a destination – made all the more perfect by beaches like Perranporth. Offering 3 miles of year-round, dog-friendly sandy beach and home to the UK’s only restaurant and bar actually on the sand (that also happens to welcome dogs), Perranporth beach is an absolute must for the bucket-and-spade list.

Rhossili, Gower, Gower Peninsula

Voted the UK’s best dog-friendly beach by The Times, Rhossili Beach on the Gower Peninsula in Wales is a natural favourite for glorious beach bays. Inviting dogs and their owners throughout the calendar, it joins up with Llangennith Bay at low tide and benefits from masses of space for chasing tennis balls and frisbees along the shoreline. There’s plenty of parking in Rhossili village, while the cliffs around the beach are laced with coast path so you can extend your adventures by the sea.

Like a scene plucked from a canvas, Holkham Beach is widely hailed as the jewel of the North Norfolk Coast. Pretty as a picture, it’s carpeted with powder-fine sands and sets a tail-wagging backdrop for coastal adventures. A real haven for all wildlife, it is backed by a National Nature Reserve and is an important site for nesting birds. Between April and August, you’ll need to keep your dog on a lead in wildlife-rich areas but are otherwise free to play and explore at your leisure.

Ardentinny Beach, Cowal Peninsula

Situated on the stunning Cowal Peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Ardentinny Beach is a secluded beauty just waiting to be discovered. Cowal’s longest sandy beach, it is licked by the waters of Loch Long and backed by rich woodland woven with many sniff-worthy trails. Pack a bag brimming with treats and settle in for an unforgettable adventure with your loyal chum, ready to fall for the charm of this jaw-dropping part of the world.

Overlooked by the magical Bamburgh Castle, it’d be hard to find a more dramatic beach for walkies than Bamburgh in Northumberland. With zero doggy restrictions throughout the seasons, this fantastic coastal gem encourages long walks by the shore, along with, of course, a burst or two of the zoomies. At a mile and a half long and backed by a network of paths, even the most energetic pups may be worn out after a day exploring here. But then again…

Palm Bay Beach, Kent

Palm Bay Beach is a superb dog-friendly beach not far from Margate in Kent. Lifeguarded in summer and often frequented by the local water-skiing club, it is a popular spot with plenty to see and do, yet due to its size never feels overly crowded. What’s more, with Margate’s eateries and ice cream parlours just over a mile away, you won’t have to venture far afterwards to reward your efforts with tasty fodder for you and your sandy-pawed pal.

Slapton Sands, Devon

Should you like to take a break from sand for a while, then make way to Slapton Sands. Despite the name, this 2-mile-long beach is composed of tiny pebbles and is sandwiched between Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve and the sea. From sun-kissed picnics on the shore to invigorating cold water dips in the sea, it affords year-round inspiration for doggy days out in this beautiful part of Devon. And, if you have a seasoned water dog, you can also trace the shore in kayaks and SUPs here – just remember buoyancy aids for you both!

Conwy Morfa Beach, Flintshire

If your dog adores having lots of room to sprint and play, then they will love the year-round dog-friendly Conwy Morfa Beach in North Wales. With fantastic views of the Great Orme, Puffin Island, Anglesey, Conwy Mountain and more, it provides a real feast for the eye as feet roam and paws bound across the sand. Once you’ve walked all you can walk, there are also lots of shops and eateries nearby in the historic castle town of Conwy.

Nairn Beach, Inverness

East of Inverness, the seaside resort of Nairn is one of the most northerly of its kind in the UK. Face to face with the sea, it is made all the more inviting thanks to its expansive sandy beach that extends eastwards towards Moray. Impressively earning the Seaside Award flag consistently since 1994, Nairn Central is up there with the crème de la crème, and, with a gently sloping shore and paddle-worthy sea, is a firm favourite amongst energetic pups and senior hounds alike. It’s a must for a visit when staying for a dog-friendly holiday in this part of Scotland.

Murlough Beach, County Down

Murlough is an enormous, 4-mile-long beach set beneath the majestic Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland. Coated with golden sand, it is an idyllic place for leisurely or fast-paced ambles with your faithful companion. Bundle up a blanket and a bottle of water and head off, ready for salty air and warm sunshine to boost those feel-good endorphins.
