Those who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of London for a well-earned break have a wide range of options for dog-friendly destinations that are less than a few hours away.

It’s only a relatively short drive to the rolling hills of the South Downs or the Cotswolds, where there are lovely footpaths through beautiful countryside and pretty villages. Stow-on the-Wold and Bourton-on-Water make idyllic bases for exploring the scenic highlights of the Cotswolds.

Those who prefer a close-by coastal break with their four-legged friend can choose from the Essex shoreline and resorts such as Frinton-on-Sea or Walton-on-the-Naze. While the whole stretch of coast from Kent through to Hampshire is accessible within a few hours from London.

The Peak District, for instance, has some wonderful walking trails for days out with dogs. There’s a great selection of dog-friendly properties in or close to wonderful Peak locations such as Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton.

The Shropshire Hills and the wonderful rolling countryside of the Welsh border are also easily accessible from Birmingham city centre.

There are three national parks – the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and the Peak District – within an hour’s drive of Leeds with access to spectacular countryside and picturesque villages.

Leeds looks like it is right in the middle of northern England, yet it’s not too far to the coast of Yorkshire and Lancashire.

The Scottish Borders offer some fine dog walking countryside, only an hour or so from Edinburgh. Towns such as Kelso and Jedburgh provide instant access to rolling hills, gentle valleys and heritage attractions such as castles and Hadrian’s Wall.

Those seeking a coastal road trip can head north to the charming fishing village of Anstruther or the beautiful coastline in the Montrose area. While the picturesque Northumberland towns of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnmouth and Amble are also within a two-hour drive, providing access to spectacular coastal scenery dotted with castles and glorious sandy beaches.

As the gateway to the South West, people in Bristol are spoilt for choice when it comes to dog-friendly coastal holidays. The Somerset, Devon, Dorset and South Wales coasts are all easily accessible with a short drive from Bristol.

Although Clevedon beach and Weston-Super-Mare are practically on the doorstep, most people will continue down the M5 to holiday hotspots such as Porlock, Sidmouth and Lyme Regis.
