With some of the best walks in Yorkshire, Glaisdale is a great base for walkers, cyclists and those wishing to experience the beauty of the North York Moors National Park. The village lies just south of the River Esk where there’s excellent fly fishing to be had (licences can be purchased from the local shop). The Esk Valley Railway runs through the village. Trains run from Whitby to Middlesbrough on a regular basis. From Whitby you can also catch the steam train over the moors to the market town of Pickering.

The town and seaside resort of Whitby is less than 10 miles away where you’ll find an array of shops, pubs and restaurants. Whitby is still a busy working harbour and you can sit and watch the fishermen bring in their catch or see the children enjoying the pleasure boats. Whitby has a large sandy beach and perched on the hill overlooking the town is the famous Whitby Abbey. The cobbled streets lead you up to the abbey where the last stretch is a climb of 199 steps. There are excellent views from the top down towards Robin Hood’s Bay and Scarborough, then north towards Sandsend and Staithes. Beach 10 miles. Shop 40 yards, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

Guest Comments

“Fab base to explore the area, lovely dog friendly pub. Bit hit n miss for parking is the only negative, you might be further up the hill.”

“The Snug was very clean and tidy but as we had a dog with us we would have appreciated a strong hoover so that we could have left the cottage as clean as we found it. We had a fantastic week and really enjoyed the local walks and meals at both local pubs. I didn’t take a hairdryer and there wasn’t one in the cottage so I’d advice you take one with you but overall a great little cottage to stay in”

“Fabulous little cottage. Perfect for two and a little dog. Left my keys there and the service I received in getting them back was second to none. The cottage was spotless and will definitely go back. I didn’t have a pen to write in the welcome book but we where very pleased with our break x”

“Loved it. The open fire was a bonus. Local power cut for 3 and a half hours. But was well stocked with coal so we stoked up the fire and read and relaxed. We would like to explore the area in warmer weather. We will be back.”

Jane, January 2019

“We had a lovely time. The coal fire made it very cosy, the village was welcoming and the surrounding area quite beautiful. I do advise taking extra pillows if you like more than one (I read earlier reviews and so took some; we also took some additional kindling just in case, though there was some in the outhouse). The mattress does make you roll together a bit but I have certainly slept on worse!”

COVID-19 Information

This information is provided by the property’s owner or manager and is relevant to this property ONLY:

“You will be able to choose any one of the following three options if we or the accommodation provider cancel your booking, or if you cancel your booking because UK government public health measures mean that it is unlawful to travel to or make use of the accommodation you booked:
Full refund – we will refund you the full amount you have paid for your booking.
Transfer to a later date or different accommodation – subject to availability, we will help you move your booking to a later date or even a new location or accommodation with no admin fees, but please be aware that if the cost of your new accommodation is higher than your original booking, then you’ll need to pay the difference.
Choose an e-voucher to rebook your holiday online – you can request an e-voucher for the amount you have previously paid for your booking. You can then use it to book a new holiday online or towards another existing booking, without having to call us. Vouchers issued in 2020 are valid until 31st December 2020 and can be used on holidays departing before 31st December 2021.
Plus, to give our customers the added flexibility they need at this time, for any bookings with arrival dates on or before 31 December 2020, the following applies:
Pay for your 2020 break just 3 weeks before you go – to give you more time to pay for your holiday during these uncertain times, we’ve moved the balance due date for bookings with arrival dates up to 31st December 2020 to just 21 days before your holiday is due to start. If you choose to cancel your holiday before your balance due date, then we will waive your liability for the remainder of the balance and no further amount will be collected from you. If you choose to cancel on or after your balance due date, then you will need to pay the cancellation charges (according to the number of days before the start of your holiday) as set out in the cancellation charges table which you can find in your booking conditions, as well as any applicable booking fees, admin charges or insurance premiums that you owe. See booking conditions here.
*If you have booked a property that is stated to sleep 10 people or more and your booking begins between 1 September and 31 December 2020, your balance due date will remain at 12 weeks prior to the holiday start date as set out in the booking conditions.”
